The new vinyl release of the german Finnish singer-songwriter Makkela good ten years – maybe a few more – the german Finnish singer/songwriter played now the clubs, bars, cabarets, and cultural centres in Europe. So far under the name of Makkela’s trash lounge. Mainly solo. That is a long time. Nevertheless the desire has followed clearly the appearance and song writing it seems time – at least small – change has become. Whether the waiver of the appendage “Trash Lounge” has something to do with shedding ballast was then provided.
Something seems to have causes the change, however. The four songs of the new Makkela release beat a little folkigeren, rougher tone. Last but not least, bouzouki thanks to the Irish to heard often now in his performances. Significantly slimmed down has been since the last album in full lineup in the House of Makkela. Reduction on the virtues of the live presence of the tour last year. The Kleinstbesetzung of these four tracks were recorded does the thing on the one audibly good, on the other hand the lineup is also the one or two surprises. It was recorded on the days of this year’s tour of Scandinavia in Finland. In a vacant warehouse in Rovaniemi/Lapland together with the pianist and drummer of the Finnish beat punks the Nightingales, and in a secluded summer home in the woods of southern Finland with bassist/songwriter and Kaurismaki actor Marko Haavisto.
Apparently in fruitful atmosphere, when you listen to the result. A four pieces on condensed snapshot. Question was whether autobiographical or not, intense material is without a doubt. A Polaroid of observations and self-reflection, which is therefore in the case of the opener “Crisis” as a wonderfully oblique swinging Ragtime meets lo-fi pop number. Somehow charming old-fashioned. Or retro-chic? -Amazingly catchy is it and seems made for single format. A small 7 “vinyl release that is more than just an appetizer on the album upcoming for the fall 2014.
